Indigenous Indian tribes that inhabited the northeastern woodlands of North America (around Pennsylvania) and north into Canada created the game of and played lacrosse. The game was often used to settle inter-tribal disputes, and is often cited as the sole reason for the long-standing cohesion of the Six Nations of the Iroquois. When European settlers saw the game, they made it their own, changed some rules, and coined the word, Lacrosse. The Montreal Lacrosse Club was founded in 1856, and lacrosse was first entered into the Olympic Games in 1904. By the mid-1960s, lacrosse was played across most US college campuses and is today very popular amongst many competitive private high schools.
